Conference team building (CSR)
Conference team building is a specific session built into your conference. It could be an icebreaker, an energizer, or a focused team event, planned into your schedule rather than bolted between presentations. Most providers deliver an act that turns up, performs and leaves your agenda to recover. We organise conferences for a living, so we know strategically when this session should be built into your conference - timed to the room's energy, sized to the space, and on and off stage without costing you a slot.

Where the session sits in your agenda
Team-building icebreakers and motivators need to be strategically placed in your conference. The right format depends on where the conference needs lifting:
-
The Conference opening - typically a short icebreaker that gets strangers talking before the first plenary, so the networking starts at nine, not at the bar. Typically this activity lasts. 25 to 45 minutes.
-
After lunch - a popular time for the energiser slot. Known as the graveyard session this is when your conference needs a livener so the afternoon speakers inherit an awake room. Plan typically for 30 to 45 minutes.
-
The half-day session - a full team event built into day one or two, for leadership conferences and away-conferences where team development is on the agenda in its own right. See Catalent UK The Brand event for 500.
-
Around the gala dinner - short punchy team activities that warm the evening up before the awards or wind it into the entertainment. This could be as simple as heads and tails, with the appropriate incentive prize.
Tell us the agenda and the delegate numbers, and we will tell you which slot earns its place - and if the honest answer is that your agenda is already full, we will say that.
Designed for a conference room, not against it
A conference session has constraints a team building day never meets, and the format has to respect them:
-
It usually runs in the plenary room or a breakout beside it - we need to ensure no venue change, no lost delegates.
-
Set-up and strike happen around your programme, in coffee breaks, not through them. This is where so many agents get it wrong, it's all about logistics.
-
Every delegate takes part at once, whether that is forty people or four hundred. It's all about orchestrated logistical entertainment planning.
-
The session hands back to your compere on time whose job it is to stick to the schedule. Overruns are a design failure, not bad luck. That's why our clients benefit from a fully managed service.
Popular conference team-building actvities
One team for the whole conference
If we are already organising your conference, the team session costs nothing extra to coordinate - same crew, same production, same run-of-show. If another team is running your conference, we deliver the session into their agenda and make their timings work. Either way, if the wider event still needs a home, our conference service covers the lot.
How the conference plan comes together

Charity team building FAQ's
How long does a conference team building session need?
Between 25 minutes and half a day, depending on the job. Icebreakers and energisers run 25 to 45 minutes and fit inside an existing agenda. Team sessions with development objectives need two hours or more and should be planned as agenda items in their own right. The programme decides, not the format.
Can the session run in the same room as the conference?
Yes, and it usually should - keeping delegates in the plenary room protects the timetable. We design around your stage, seating and AV, and reset the room during a normal break. A separate breakout works too when the format needs floor space.
Do these sessions work when delegates are strangers?
Yes - that is the point of the opening slot. Formats for unfamiliar groups are built on mixed teams and shared tasks rather than personal disclosure, so nobody is put on the spot. By the first coffee break the room has something to talk about.
What if we have already planned our conference?
Don't worry, we'll give you an honest appraisal of whether you need an icebreaker or energizer within your conference. After a brief discussion, it's generally discovered whether your conference needs motivational team build or just an energizer. We always start by listening to our client first.
Can I build a charity motivational event into my conference?
Absolutely, you can! Conferences generally present a large volume of people, which means an excellent supply of short-term labour for charity events like packing, delivering, installing or building.
